Destination Feature: South Africa

It’s no secret that we love South Africa. From Cape Town to Safari, this trip offers the perfect balance of city exploration, relaxing wine country experiences, and exciting game drive adventures. If South Africa is on your bucket list, check out this sample itinerary packed with our favorite places to stay and see:

Cape Town is a vibrant city set right on the Western Cape, capped by the Atlantic Ocean and Table Mountain. With three restaurants on the Top 100 in the World List, this city is an ideal destination for foodies.
Day 1: Welcome to Cape Town! Get settled and grab a casual dinner.
Day 2: Head out on a private Cape Peninsula Tour to check in at the southernmost part of the continent and visit the penguins of Boulders Beach. Enjoy a local favorite for dinner.
Day 3: Explore Cape Town by starting your day with a Table Mountain hike, visit the colorful houses of Bo-Kaap, and spend the afternoon at the V&A Waterfront. Enjoy a special tasting menu dinner.

Cape Winelands: 2 nights at La Residence or Leeu Estates
The Winelands are an easy 45-minute drive from Cape Town and a great way to relax after a busy few days in the city.
Day 4: Transfer to your Winelands hotel after taking a private wine tour. This maximizes your time before check-in and allows you to settle in on arrival with a little buzz. Enjoy dinner on property (with plenty more wine!)
Day 5: Relax on property, book a spa treatment, or explore more on the Wine Tram. Enjoy a farm-to-table meal at one of the amazing restaurants in Stellenbosch, Franschoek, or Paarl.

Safari: 3-4 nights at Lion Sands, AndBeyond, or Kapama Karula. Luxe Splurge: Singita & Londolozi
Consider yourselves warned — this experience will ruin you for all future trips and you'll find yourselves constantly comparing every other stay to safari.
Day 6: Transfer to your safari lodge, check out your amazing room, and head out for your first game drive!!!!
Day 7-8: Wake up with the sunrise for your morning game drive. After a few glorious hours in the bush, come back for a full breakfast. Enjoy some mid-day relaxing at the lodge by the pool or at the spa. Head out on your evening game drive and then toast to an incredible day with sundowners, a tradition of having sunset drinks in the bush in the middle of your game drive. Get back to the lodge for an amazing dinner before a well-earned bubble bath and bedtime.
Day 9: Get ready for your last game drive this morning :( and head to the airport for departure.

  • Wait, so I can do this trip in less than 10 days? Yes! No need to take off 2 weeks from work to get a great and fulfilling trip to South Africa!
  • What can I expect to spend? We recommend budgeting at least $15-$20K for a mix of 4- and 5-star hotels or $25-$30K for an ultra-luxury African experience.
  • When’s the best time to go? Anytime! South Africa is really great year-round and OTM always has clients on the ground. If you want the best game viewing, May - October are the dry seasons, making it easier to spot and track animals. November - April are Cape Town's warmer months, making them perfect for outdoor activities.
  • So, I have to pack in a tiny duffle bag, right? Not true! Most flights to safari are domestic flights, so the baggage restrictions are similar to what we have here, but you can always check directly with the airline you book with. If you have to take a shuttle flight with stricter baggage rules, we will always let you know ahead of time!
  • What if I also want a beach option? We love pairing this trip with the Seychelles, Mauritius, or Mozambique! You may need a layover night in Johannesburg, so we usually recommend allotting an additional 4 nights.
  • How far in advance should I book? With the growing popularity of safari it’s best to book about 10-12 months in advance, but with OTM on your side, we can help scout the best safari locations with shorter lead times.
  • What if I want to go, but it’s not for my honeymoon? South Africa + Safari makes for the most amazing honeymoon, but it’s also great for any reason at all. For special celebrations, some safari lodges offer Milestone Discounts for certain anniversaries or birthdays, sweetening the deal! With enough notice we can also plan for exclusive use – so you can bring all of your friends and family for a private safari experience.

I’m in, how can I get started?
